Years One to Two (5 - 7 Years)

As your child sets out on their learning journey, the next step after Reception takes place in September following their fifth birthday.  Children progress from the Foundation Stage into Key Stage One, starting with Year One.  We focus on developing skills in Literacy, Numeracy and Science  to provide a firm foundation from which your child can achieve to the best of their abilities.  It is from here that children progress into Year Two.

Your child’s learning is shaped by a broad and balanced Curriculum for the subjects of Mathematics, English, Science, Art and Design, Dance, Drama, French, Geography, Gymnastics, History, Information and Communication Technology, Music, Physical Education, Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education and Religious Education.

Focused Learning

We take great pride in the quality and experience of our teaching team, which is ably supported by experienced, highly competent, classroom assistants.  We focus on quality teaching and maintain small class sizes so that teachers and children develop a close understanding and trust in each other.

Class teachers take the lead in core subjects so that your child benefits from continuity of style and delivery.  Support from specialist staff in Drama, French, ICT, Music and Physical Education provides further focus and a high level of experience in these specialist subjects.  Practical work, mental arithmetic, science investigations, confidence in ICT, spelling, fluency in reading and writing and a love of school are just some of the skills which can be achieved in our pupils in Key Stage One.

Learning at Home

Learning beyond School is an important part of your child’s early education. Each child has a homework notebook in which parents are encouraged to provide feedback and comments concerning progress.  Additional daily reading is also encouraged and we subscribe to a variety of well-known reading schemes, as well as providing a range of diverse materials that encourages  interest, motivation and pleasure in reading.

Welcoming Your Involvement

We appreciate fully parents/guardians who take an active interest and dynamic role in the life of the School. Equally, we take seriously our responsibility to share your child’s educational, social and emotional progress. Parents’ Meetings which take place three times a year provide a forum for face-to-face feedback. Written assessments are issued at the end of each half-term and a full report is produced for each child in the Summer Term.  Additional informal meetings can be arranged at the discretion of teachers or parents.
