Art, Design & Technology

The study of Art and Design is an important feature of the curriculum. Our experienced staff specialise in a wide variety of techniques, presenting pupils with aesthetic and artistic experiences along with opportunities for self discovery. Pupils are challenged and encouraged to become reflective practitioners and are nurtured to develop confidence in their own intellectual and practical abilities.
Housed in an inspiring historical building with original wooden beams, the Art Department provides a perfect setting with far reaching views of the countryside. In Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils follow a programme that encompasses the National Curriculum and is a building block of experiences in preparation for GCSE.
The Department consists of three main studios including areas for Fine Art, a Sixth Form Art studio and an AS/A Level Textile studio. We set high standards and have high expectations of our students, providing them with exciting stimuli to enable them to experience success at all levels.
Examination results are excellent with pupils often achieving full marks in both coursework and timed submission. The majority of students taking the subject at A Level go on to study courses in Art, Design, Textile, Fashion or Architecture at university.
The Department exhibits its work around the whole school community and holds a biennial full School exhibition inviting pupils, parents and staff from both our own School and other institutions. Other outputs include set designs for theatrical productions in School and we organise at least two Art trips a year in both this country and abroad. Places visited include Saltzburg, Barcelona, and Venice.
Our students have enjoyed notable success in national competitions such as the annual Google Logo design competition and OCR National exhibition at Birmingham City Art Gallery. Past examples of work can be found on the OCR CD Rom of exemplar work distributed to all schools across the country.
