Business Studies

Business Studies Department

Business Studies is a popular A Level option at Ockbrook School.  Students who study the subject not only learn about the many theoretical business and economy concepts, but also develop a passion for enterprise and commerce that can provide an excellent foundation for a range of university degree courses and careers.  Students study concepts in a way which allows them to connect with subject matter and evaluate ideas.  Our students see a range of long term benefits in a number of transferable skill areas including decision making, application and evaluation

Through studying the subject candidates will be able to;

  • develop an understanding of business organisations, the markets they serve and the process of adding value to generate quality end products;
  • consider wider issues relating to businesses including economic performance and its effects on the strategies of firms
  • treat subject matter in a current context that can be related to practical examples

Course Content

The AS and A2 Business Studies courses explore a variety of integrated themes, each of which provides a detailed insight into the commercial environment in practice.  During the course students will be encouraged to develop a rounded understanding of organisations and appreciate their vital role in society.

The Business Studies course consists of two modules in each of the AS and A2 years.  During this time students will study topic areas including marketing, human resources, business operations management and financial considerations for companies.  Additionally candidates will assess how business decisions are made, the objectives of businesses and the many external factors affecting businesses (e.g. the economy plus ethical and legal issues).

There is a widespread use of real life business case studies in the teaching and assessment of Business Studies at Ockbrook School.  Many of these bring in topical issues facing businesses in this country and in the wider European and global contexts.

In addition to developing subject knowledge and understanding, students who opt for Business Studies will see the long term benefits in a number of transferable skill areas including research decision making, analysis and evaluation.  There will be opportunities throughout the course to use ICT.

The department recently visited Toyota UK where students witnessed first-hand the innovative manufacturing processes used by this firm.
