Psychology

It is an unfortunate fact that studying Psychology will not make you psychic! So, why study it then?

Studying Psychology will enable you to describe and explain human behaviour accurately. Once you can do that you will often be able to predict when someone will behave in a certain way. Finally, once you can do all of these things, you will be able change people’s behaviours and attitudes.

Psychology is a fascinating subject. During the course we study the concept of memory and how we store information and retrieve it. We also study child development, obedience and how phobias are formed. If you continue to study the subject at A2 level, we’ll look at mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and depression. We even study people who claim to have seen ghosts or been abducted by aliens!

Below you’ll find links to a number of external websites all about Psychology:

http://www.innocenceproject.org – When studying Cognitive Psychology we look at the issue of eye witness testimony and if we can always believe what people say they have seen. This website looks at the unreliable nature of eyewitness testimony and cases of those who have been wrongly convicted.

http://www.horizonresearch.org – When studying Anomalistic Psychology we look at people who claim to have had out-of-body experiences. This website helps people understand what may have happened to them.

http://phobialist.com  – During AS Level studies, we look at the formation of phobias. This fun list gives the Latin names for some very unusual fears! Did you know that there is a phobia called Arachibutyrophobia, which is the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth?

http://www.prisonexp.org – This website contains a great slideshow telling you all about one of the most ethically questionable Psychology experiments ever conducted.
