A fund raising day by students at Ockbrook School has raised over £1600 for victims of the devastating Haiti earthquake.

Cake making and baking by Ockbrook’s Sixth Form students contributed over £170 towards the fund-raising event. Children as young as two from Ockbrook’s Early Years Department also joined pupils and students from the School’s Primary and Senior Departments, donning colourful clothes and donating a minimum of £1 each to the earthquake appeal.

Sixth formers Amy Haskins Drew and Holly Barker, said: “Everyone really pulled together to raise as much money as we could and baking gave us a sense of purpose. I think our efforts were enjoyed by all!”

Alison Steele, Head Teacher, Ockbrook School, was overwhelmed by the response: “We have held non-uniform days in the past in aid of a number of charities but this appeal has really struck at the heart of our school community. The generosity of parents and students was wonderful, raising over £1600 in just one day.

“A number of our students take part in overseas aid projects as part of the School’s extra curricular programme and are very aware of the challenging conditions in which many people live, so this tragic event has real resonance with them. The TV images of the earthquake and the destruction that this caused cannot fail to move you and this is the School’s small way of helping Haiti back on its feet.”

Students at Ockbrook School are making final preparations this week ahead of the annual Christmas production.
Pupils will take the audience to a fairytale world of dragons and knights when they stage Robert Bolt’s well-known comedy play ‘The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew’ on Wednesday 16th and Thursday 16th December at Ockbrook School Hall from 7pm.
Senior school pupils aged 11 – 18 years will make up the 16 strong cast of the comic adventure which tells the story of Sir Oblong Fitz Oblong, a knight on a mission to bring order to the Bolligrew Islands. He tackles a string of adventures on his journey including duels and magic spells as well as confronting a dragon, a wicked baron and a down-trodden peasant - the perfect mix of ingredients for an exciting Christmas production.
Year 12 students, Jessica Holyoake and Hannah Bradley will play Bir Oblong Fitz Oblong, the knight errant and Baron Bolligrew, the evil Baron respectively. Both girls are veteran performers for Ockbrook productions having been stalwarts of the drama club for several years.
Year seven pupil, Lucy Smith will be making her debut performance as the Duke while year nine student, Aimée Reeves has been cast to play one of the cheeky magpies.
David Hannigan, Head of Drama, said: ‘We are delighted to be holding yet another fantastic school production. Everyone involved from the performers to the costume and set designers have worked extremely hard. This is a funny, fast-moving and well-written adventure story that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.”
